So far away

During this time of year I am always taken back to the days when my grandparents were alive.  Walking into the house and smelling the wonderful aroma of my granny's cooking and hearing her laugh at something that one us did.  Listening to my papa having all of the grandchildren gathered around him tell stories of the days when he was young.  My all time favorite was when he set the barn and mule on fire!  He was so animated.  I seem to think each year that they are slipping farther away from me, but when the holidays come around the pain becomes almost overwhelming again.  I will never understand exactly why they were ripped from our lives so soon or why it seemed so unfair that they were the ones taken and not others.  I miss them.  The days I spent with them I will forever cherish.  I certainly wish they could have been there in person to watch me marry the love of my life and give me the advice that I need when we hit those rocky spots.  I made a trip not too along ago to their final resting place.  It was a hard trip for me to make, I haven't been in years.  The first things out of my mouth were "I am so sorry I haven't been here in so long.  I still love you."  Even I know they would have never thought that I didn't love them or that I had forgotten them.  I do find it bitter sweet to have the memories cause when they make me smile at the same time they break my heart.  So to everyone that has a grandparent that loves you and truly cares, cherish them.  They will not always be around for you to talk to, to hug, or to even just make you smile.  I love you both very much and will hold you in my heart forever.
